Frequently Asked Questions

Personal Training & Online Coaching

1. How does personal training work?

Personal training provides individualized exercise programming based on your goals, current fitness level, exercise experience, health history, and individual needs. A personal trainer should do more than simply take you through a workout. Your program should have a purpose, progress over time, and change as you become stronger and more capable.

At A2i Fitness, training may take place in your home, virtually, or through online coaching using the A2i Fitness app, depending on the service you choose.

2. How do I choose the right personal trainer?

Start by looking for a trainer who actually provides personal training. Your workouts should be designed around you, not be the trainer's own workout, their last client's workout, or the same routine given to every client.

Before you begin training, a qualified personal trainer should ask questions about your goals, exercise experience, health history, injuries, medications, and other factors that could affect exercise. This information helps the trainer determine what is appropriate for you and whether medical clearance or additional guidance from a healthcare professional may be needed.

Look for a trainer who holds a current certification from a reputable organization such as the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), or American Council on Exercise (ACE). They should also maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.

Bonus points for formal education. A bachelor's degree or higher in exercise science, kinesiology, exercise physiology, or a related field provides additional academic education in areas such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, and exercise programming.

Finally, a good trainer should be able to explain why you are doing an exercise, modify your training when necessary, and progressively adjust your program as you improve.

3. Is a personal trainer worth it?

A personal trainer can be a worthwhile investment if you want individualized programming, professional guidance, accountability, or help making progress beyond what you have been able to accomplish on your own.

Good personal training is more than having someone count repetitions or provide motivation. A qualified trainer makes decisions about exercise selection, technique, training volume, intensity, recovery, and progression based on you. The goal is to help you become stronger, more capable, and increasingly confident in what you are doing and why you are doing it.

4. How often should I work with a personal trainer?

There is no single training frequency that is right for everyone. How often you meet with a personal trainer depends on your goals, exercise experience, schedule, budget, and how comfortable you are training independently.

Someone who is new to strength training, returning after a long break, learning new movements, or looking for greater accountability may benefit from working with a trainer more frequently at first. Someone who is experienced and comfortable exercising independently may need less frequent sessions for programming, technique, progression, and accountability.

It is also important to distinguish between how often you exercise and how often you meet with a trainer. You may train several days each week without needing every workout to be supervised by a personal trainer.

5. Is online personal training as effective as in-person personal training?

Online personal training can be an effective option for someone who is comfortable exercising independently but still wants individualized programming, structure, progression, and professional guidance.

In-person training provides live coaching and immediate feedback during your workout. Online coaching offers greater flexibility because you can complete your workouts on your own schedule while still following a program designed specifically for you.

Neither format is automatically better. The best choice depends on your experience, goals, need for hands-on coaching, and how independently you prefer to train.

6. What is the difference between online and in-person personal training?

With in-person personal training, your trainer is physically present during your workout to coach technique, make adjustments, select appropriate loads, and progress your training in real time.

With online personal training, your workouts are still individualized, but you complete them independently using the A2i Fitness app. Your program can be adjusted as you progress based on your results, feedback, and needs.

Both provide personalized programming. The primary difference is how the coaching is delivered and how independently you complete your workouts.

7. Do I need a gym or special equipment for online personal training?

Not necessarily. One advantage of individualized programming is that your workouts can be designed around the equipment and space you actually have available.

Many people can strength train effectively at home with basic equipment such as dumbbells, resistance bands, an exercise mat, and a bench or sturdy chair. If additional equipment would be useful for your goals or progression, recommendations can be made as needed.

In-Home Personal Training in San Antonio

8. Do you offer in-home personal training in San Antonio?

Yes. A2i Fitness provides in-home personal training in select areas of San Antonio and surrounding communities.

In-home personal training brings individualized strength and fitness coaching to you, allowing you to train in your own environment without commuting to a gym or training facility. Your workouts are designed around your goals, abilities, available space, and equipment.

9. What areas of San Antonio do you serve for in-home personal training?

A2i Fitness provides in-home personal training within a designated service area in San Antonio and select surrounding communities. Availability and pricing may depend on travel distance.

You can use the service-area ZIP code checker on the A2i Fitness website to see whether your location is currently within the in-home training area.

10. Can I work with a personal trainer if I'm a beginner or haven't exercised in years?

Absolutely. You do not need to "get in shape" before working with a personal trainer. Meeting you where you are is part of the trainer's job.

A well-designed program should account for your current strength, mobility, exercise experience, confidence, and goals. From there, exercises and training demands can be progressed gradually as your abilities improve.

A2i Fitness works with adults with a wide range of exercise experience, including people who are completely new to strength training and those returning after years away from structured exercise. START HERE.

11. Can I work with a personal trainer after physical therapy or an injury?

In many cases, yes, once it is appropriate for you to return to exercise and you have received any necessary clearance from your healthcare provider.

There can be a significant gap between finishing physical therapy and feeling confident returning to regular strength training. A qualified personal trainer can help you transition back into a well-rounded strength and exercise program while respecting recommendations, limitations, or restrictions provided by your healthcare team.

It is important to understand that personal trainers and physical therapists have different scopes of practice. A personal trainer may also be a licensed physical therapist if they hold both qualifications, but all personal trainers are not physical therapists. Personal training credentials alone do not qualify someone to practice physical therapy, diagnose injuries, or provide rehabilitation.

A2i Fitness respects the physical therapy process and does not replace the care provided by your physical therapist. Once you have been cleared to continue your return to strength training, A2i Fitness can work with you and, when appropriate, collaborate with your physical therapist to help create a smooth transition from rehabilitation to regular exercise.

Self-Guided Strength Training Programs

12. What is a self-guided workout program?

A self-guided workout program gives you a structured training plan to complete independently without ongoing one-on-one coaching.

A2i Fitness self-guided strength programs provide your workouts through the A2i Fitness app, including scheduled training days, exercises, instructions, and exercise demonstrations. Instead of trying to piece together random workouts, you follow a structured program designed to progress from week to week.

13. Are self-guided workout programs good for beginners?

Yes, provided the program is actually designed for a beginner.

A beginner strength program should teach fundamental movements, use an appropriate amount of training volume, and progress gradually rather than simply providing easier versions of advanced workouts.

A2i Strength Foundation: Beginner is designed for adults who are new to structured strength training or want to rebuild their foundation. The goal is to help you develop strength, movement confidence, and an understanding of how to follow a structured strength-training program.

14. What is the difference between a self-guided workout program and online personal training?

The biggest difference is personalization and coaching.

A self-guided program is pre-designed and completed independently. Everyone purchasing that particular program follows the same overall training progression.

Online personal training is individualized. Your workouts are designed specifically for your goals, abilities, equipment, exercise experience, and needs, and your programming can be adjusted as you progress.

A self-guided program may be a good fit if you want an affordable, structured plan and feel comfortable exercising independently. Online personal training may be a better fit if you want individualized programming, ongoing coaching, accountability, or modifications specific to you.

15. What equipment do I need for an A2i Fitness self-guided strength program?

Equipment requirements vary by program, so always check the individual program description before purchasing.

A2i Fitness Strength Foundation programs are designed to be practical for home training and use basic equipment such as dumbbells, an exercise mat, and a bench or sturdy chair. You do not need access to a fully equipped gym.

16. Can I do an A2i Fitness self-guided strength program at home?

Yes. A2i Fitness self-guided strength programs are designed to be completed at home with basic exercise equipment.

Your workouts are delivered through the A2i Fitness app so you can see what is scheduled, follow the exercises and demonstrations, and complete your training on your own schedule. A traditional gym membership is not required.
